The Met Office has issued amber warnings for the North of England, parts of North Wales and Northern Ireland ahead of Storm Éowyn which has been classed as ‘exceptionally dangerous’ and a ‘danger to life.’
Éowyn will undergo rapid changes ahead of its arrival in the UK on Thursday as it travels across the Atlantic. Éowyn is expected to bring strong winds, heavy rain and snow that will batter most of the UK from Thursday until Saturday.
The storm is expected to impact areas especially vulnerable to flooding and power outages, leading to heightened concerns for both residential and commercial properties. Authorities are advising residents to prepare for possible power outages and transportation disruptions.
Storm Éowyn is the third storm in recent months to cause significant disruption to the UK:
Bert
In November, Storm Bert raged across the UK, impacting the British Isles with heavy rain, strong winds, and snow, causing significant flooding in parts of Wales and England. Storm Bert caused significant damage to Wales, with heavy rainfall leading to widespread flooding, particularly in the south Wales valleys, affecting over 700 properties and causing some rivers to reach record high levels; considered one of the worst recent storm events for the region.
Darragh
More recently in December, Storm Darragh was considered a significant storm, causing widespread disruption across the UK with strong winds gusting up to 96mph, resulting in power outages for thousands of homes, fallen trees, flooding, and travel disruption, with some areas experiencing major damage, particularly in Wales where the storm caused significant disruption to ports and coastal infrastructure.
Stay Safe
Residents are advised to prepare by securing outdoor items, stocking up on essentials like food and water, and ensuring they have emergency supplies, including a flashlight and batteries. It’s crucial to stay updated through local weather reports and heed any evacuation orders. In the case of severe weather, staying indoors is recommended, and if travel is necessary, caution is advised.
