Trains halted as concerns over subsidence raised near Carmarthen

Trains departing from Carmarthen Station have been cancelled as a result of a safety inspection between Carmarthen and Swansea. Great Western Railway have reported that the line has been blocked with disruption expected until the end of the day.

At approximately 25 past 6 this evening, a train departed Carmarthen Station and got as far as the embankment between Carmarthen and Pibwrlwyd where it abruptly stopped, waited a short time and began reversing back to the station.

Cheryl Hayter who lives at Cedar Vale was a first hand witness and told us that after the train began to reverse, a rapid-response vehicle arrived in the lane adjacent to her property and rail workers began to walk toward the tracks. One of the workers approached Cheryl and informed her that the driver of the train had raised concerns over potential subsidence on the rail ahead.

Cheryl told us that over the last few weeks, rail workers had been periodically working in the area, replacing old railway lines. Rail workers had told Cheryl that there had been issues in the area relating to subsidence.

We have reached out to GWR for a statement.
