Snowsport Cymru Wales hit the Dry Slope at Pembrey

On Saturday (8th Feb), Carmarthenshire News Online took a trip down to Pembrey Country Park where Snowsport Cymru Wales were in the midst of six training sessions for their regional squad and national squad of young skiers who were displaying some very promising talent whilst on the dry slope at Pembrey.

We interviewed Snowsport Cymru Wales’ chief executive Robin Kellen who was present, supervising the day of training. Robin said that Pembrey’s dry slope prays a critical role in the competitions that they compete in.

We asked Robin if the conditions in Wales posed a challenge to training for national and international events. Robin said that whilst more snow would be helpful, the indoor snow centre planned for Merthyr Tydfil would be an amazing addition and would become a national training centre, not just for Wales, but for GB (Great Britain) as well.
Robin praised the young skiers who train with Snowsport Wales, saying that in terms of ranking, Welsh kids are ‘outgunning’ most of the rest, with four girls in the top 10. Robin said that a young girl who has trained with Snowsport Wales is now on her way to the World Championships.
We asked Robin if he had a message for anyone contemplating getting their kids to take up sport and getting fit and if it’s good for them. Robin said that every sport is good for kids, every sport is good for people.
“We like this sport,” Robin says, referring to skiing.
“It provides a bit of a challenge, a new skill and it’s something you can do as an individual sport but also with your mates and family.
“If you can ride a bike, you can ski, it’s as simple as that. It provides something that’s different you know, football, rugby, cycling isn’t for everyone, but this is a sport that is an alternative for people.”
