Review: God’s Official by Robert Farquhar

Our local news writer Tessa Finch was given a front row seat to experience the hilarious chaos of God’s Official:

“The play was male orientated in both the theme of football – and cast.  The play was performed by just three actors, with no stage scenery or props, though this did not impede their performance.

“There was no stage amplification, though given the size of the hall, their voices carried well enough – with Degsy perhaps a tad too loud, Greaves a little too quiet, and Cliff – like the baby of the three bears’ porridge – just right.

“The story of the play is of an initial protest turned almost prank, becoming something rather darker as neither of the anti-heroes are able to wind back from their increasingly desperate measures to handle the situation, becoming dangerous and violent. The deteriorating mental health and unpredictability of Degsy called to mind Begbie, played by Robert Carlyle in the film Trainspotting.

“The play is billed as a comedy and there were indeed a number of laugh out loud moments. Cliff, the hapless friend and reluctant accomplice of Degsy had the funniest lines and delivery – and the audience’s empathy.  His repeated use of the “F” word was in itself hilarious.  I didn’t much like Degsy, and had little sympathy for him, even for his personal crises which he appeared to bring upon himself.  Greaves lacked charisma, although his part wasn’t one that required any, really.  Any religious message wasn’t particularly clear, nor did it seem to help Degsy for whom things don’t end particularly well.

“Overall, the play was most enjoyable and well worth the ticket price of £7, half of which to be donated to the Mind Mental Health Charity.  It was gripping from start to finish, with a satisfactory ending.  It was well acted and especially impressive was the crazy van ride which was oddly, especially given no props, nail-biting.”

The next showings are Saturday 10th of August at Llandybie Rugby Club

Sunday 17th August at the Great Mountain Working Men’s Club in Tumble.
