Invest in your future through a health care apprenticeship

Hywel Dda University Health Board has opened its next round of Apprentice Academy places and is encouraging people with an interest in developing a career in healthcare to get in touch.

The scheme, currently open to applications, helps individuals who might not have followed more traditional routes, into a career as a registered nurse. It provides people with an opportunity to earn while they learn, here in Carmarthenshire, Ceredigion and Pembrokeshire. The apprenticeship is available for anyone from the age of 16 years old to apply (details below).

The health board has produced short video (available here (opens in new tab)) in which some of our newest apprentices talk about what it means to them to be accepted onto the programme.

The scheme is of significant benefit to the local community, as it supports the provision of compassionate care to local people at a time when there are great challenges in recruiting into clinical jobs within the NHS.

Lisa Gostling, Director of Workforce & Organisational Development at Hywel Dda UHB explained: “Our apprenticeship programme so far has seen applicants from a diverse range of ages and fields and we hope to see the same in this next round of recruitment. It is so important that we harness the skills that exist in our community to grow our future workforce.

“The structured programme helps people gain the required skills and qualifications on the job and offers a variety of learning experiences day to day.

“This programme is one of the key actions we are taking to develop our workforce in Hywel Dda UHB and reflects our strategy and vision to create a healthier mid and west Wales.”

In this round of recruitment, the health board is looking to place up to 40 healthcare apprentices across Bronglais Hospital, Aberystwyth, Glangwili Hospital, Carmarthen; Prince Philip Hospital, Llanelli and Withybush Hospital, Haverfordwest.

Those who are shortlisted will be invited to attend an assessment day and a feedback day in October/November 2022, giving a chance to meet and get to know more information about the programme. Once successfully recruited, candidates will begin employment as a healthcare apprentice with Hywel Dda University Health Board in January 2023. Those not successful this time around will be offered support from the health board, local colleges, Careers Wales Centre and the Job Centre.

24 September – Withybush Hospital

26 September – Bronglais Hospital

2 October – Prince Philip Hospital

4 October – Glangwili Hospital

During the programme, apprentices will undertake clinical healthcare support training, before progressing to university to complete a registered nursing degree on a part-time basis. At the end of the programme, participants will be qualified nurses, without having to pay any university fee. They are expected to remain in employment with Hywel Dda UHB for a minimum of two years post qualification.

Mae Bwrdd Iechyd Prifysgol Hywel Dda wedi agor ei rownd nesaf o leoedd Academi Prentisiaid ac yn annog pobl sydd â diddordeb mewn datblygu gyrfa ym maes gofal iechyd i gysylltu.

Mae’r cynllun, sy’n agored i geisiadau ar hyn o bryd, yn helpu unigolion nad ydynt efallai wedi dilyn llwybrau mwy traddodiadol, i yrfa fel nyrs gofrestredig. Mae mor bwysig ein bod yn bachu’r sgiliau sy’n bodoli yn ein cymuned i dyfu ein gweithlu yn y dyfodol.

“Mae’r rhaglen strwythuredig yn helpu pobl i ennill y sgiliau a’r cymwysterau gofynnol a hynny wrth weithio, ac mae’n cynnig amrywiaeth o brofiadau dysgu o ddydd i ddydd.

“Mae’r rhaglen hon yn un o’r camau allweddol yr ydym yn eu cymrys i ddatblygu ein gweithlu yn BIP Hywel Dda ac mae’n adlewyrchu ein strategaeth a’n gweledigaeth i greu canolbarth a gorllewin Cymru iachach.”

Yn y rownd recriwtio hon, mae’r bwrdd iechyd yn bwriadu lleoli hyd at 40 prentis gofal iechyd ar draws Ysbyty Bronglais, Aberystwyth, Ysbyty Glangwili, Caerfyrddin, Ysbyty Tywysog Philip, Llanelli ac Ysbyty Llwynhelyg, Hwlffordd.

Bydd y rhai sy’n cyrraedd y rhestr fer yn cael eu gwahodd i fynychu diwrnod asesu a diwrnod adborth ym mis Hydref/Tachwedd 2022, lle bydd cyfle i gwrdd a chyfarwyddo ac i gael mwy o wybodaeth am y rhaglen. Wedi iddynt gael eu recriwtio’n llwyddiannus, bydd ymgeiswyr yn dechrau are u cyflogaeth fel prentisiaid gofal iechyd gyda Bwrdd Iechyd Prifysgol Hywel Dda ym mis Ionawr 2023. Bydd y rhai hynny nad ydynt yn llwyddiannus y tro hwn yn cael cynnig cymorth gan y bwrdd iechyd, colegau lleol, Gyrfa Cymru a’r Ganolfan Byd Gwaith.
