Macmillan Cancer Support has extended its thanks to Carmarthenshire’s Xcel Bowl, following the presentation of a giant cheque to the charity.
Sue Reece, Relationship Fundraising Manager for Macmillan Cancer Support in Wales, visited the Johnstown bowling alley where she was presented with the cheque for £1,756.83 by Carl Jones, Host Team Leader at Xcel Bowl.
Sue said the money raised will help Macmillan with its work supporting people across Wales living with a cancer diagnosis.
She said: “We are very grateful for Xcel’s continued support. The funds raised will help so many people in Wales – as well as raising awareness among local people that help and advice is available for anyone who has received a cancer diagnosis, as well as their loved ones.”
The impressive sum was raised through a weekend of fundraising activities, which included a Macmillan Coffee Morning and a family day, as well as raffles and other fundraisers.
The bowling alley, on Llansteffan Road, has supported Macmillan since they opened in 2011 with regular Coffee Mornings and other fundraising events.
This is in addition to the fantastic work Xcel does, providing vital services in the community, with its profits supporting local people in need through Carmarthen Foodbank, Community Money Advice, and Xcel Furniture and Community Shop, as part of Xcel Project, a social enterprise run by Towy Community Church.
Carl said everyone at Xcel was thrilled with the amount raised. He said: “We had hoped to raise £1,000 so the final amount has been incredible. Thanks to everyone at Xcel for all their hard work in supporting Macmillan and also to everyone who attended on the day and those who donated cakes and raffle prizes.”
He added that plans were already underway for next year’s Coffee Morning – and that he and some team members were even considering taking on one of Macmillan’s Mighty Hikes, which see entrants hiking a half marathon or half marathon distance as part of an organised event.
Sue Reece added: “The money raised by organisations such as Xcel is absolutely vital in ensuring Macmillan can do everything it can to support cancer patients. Going through cancer treatment or getting a diagnosis is tough enough, and now the cost-of-living crisis coupled with waiting times in Wales and the treatment backlog is increasing people’s anxiety. It’s never been more important for people living with cancer to get the urgent help they need.”
