SWANSEA Council will be suspending all non-essential services on Monday, September 19 to mark the late Her Majesty The Queen’s State Funeral.
The day is a bank holiday and many of the country’s large employers and retailers have announced they will be closed for the day.
All council venues including the Guildhall and Civic Centre along with the Grand Theatre, libraries, museums and community centres will be closed to the public. Swansea Market will be closed.
All schools will also be closed for the day.
Refuse collections due on Monday will be suspended. Therefore, all waste collections will run a day late throughout the week which means Monday’s will be done on Tuesday, through to usual Friday collections being done on Saturday. Collections will then return to normal.
The council’s recycling sites will also be closed to the public on Monday, September 19.
However, essential services in social services such as residential care and domiciliary care will continue, along with critical day care services where needed.
Cremations and burials planned for Monday will continue.
Swansea bus station will remain open but individual bus operators may alter their normal timetables in line with the bank holiday so passengers are advised to check before planning journeys.
All events planned by the council will resume this week, including this weekend’s Swansea 10k race but any events planned for Monday, September 19 will be suspended.
Rob Stewart, Swansea Council’s Leader, said:
“We join the country in mourning the passing of the late HM Queen Elizabeth II.
“As a mark of respect the council will be closing non-essential services on Monday, September 19 to mark the late HM The Queen’s funeral and we are asking the public to be aware that the vast majority of our services will be closed for the day.
“We will continue to provide essential services to ensure vulnerable people are protected and our roads and transport services continue to operate.
“All council events in Swansea will resume this week, with the exception of next Monday, which gives organisers and participants the opportunity to plan.”
Although the Civic Centre will otherwise be closed, Swansea’s Book of Condolence will be available there for people to sign on Monday, September 19.
