Grandstand and five-a-side on agenda for Stebonheath

Repair work to the grandstand and a World Cup five-a-side tournament were items on the agenda of a meeting of Llanelli Town Council on October 19th 2022.

The council considered a report  prepared by the Town Clerk providing an update for members in
relation for the Grandstand steelwork.

As agreed at the meeting, a barrier test of the main stand balustrading was undertaken
in accordance with the guide to safety at sports grounds with the test finding five
barriers which had failed.

It was therefore necessary to close off the seating areas to the left and right hand side
of the main stand for the Llanelli Town AFC match to be held on the 14th October 2022.
The central seating area remains available.

Consideration will now need to be urgently given to the replacement of the entirety of
the front balustrading at the Stadium, the original recommendation received detailed a
programme of works over a number of financial years and staggered the balustrading
works over the period, however this will now need to be revisited.

RESOLVED – that the Committee:
• Approves the current mitigation measures put in place to enable continuing use
of the main stand;
• The Consultant Architect be instructed to update the report received on
necessary steelworks in order for the Committee to review and agree the areas
of work to be completed.

The Town Clerk informed members that he had been contacted by Carmarthenshire
County Council for the use of Stebonheath Ground for a Five-A-Side Football
Competition for local schools on the day of the Wales v United States of America
World Cup Game on Monday, 21st November 2022.

They have already scheduled matches in Carmarthen and Ammanford and are looking
to do the same in Llanelli, as it was felt that Llanelli Schoolchildren should be afforded
the same opportunity of marking this historic event of Wales’ qualifying for the World
Cup for the first time since 1958.

The Town Clerk has spoken to Carmarthenshire Council with regards to the Stand
situation and has been assured this what not cause a problem as there would be
extensive stewarding in place.

RESOLVED – that the information be noted and proposed use be approved.
The Meeting concluded at 6.10 p.m.
