Harassment and possession of cannabis lands Carmarthen man in prison

A 39-year-old man from Carmarthen has been fined and sent to prison for harassment and possession of cannabis.

James Lane of Lammas Street in Carmarthen appeared before Llanelli Magistrates’ Court charged with harassment and possession of cannabis.

The court heard that on 05/07/2022 at Carmarthen, Lane with intent to cause persons harassment, alarm or distress, used threatening, abusive or insulting words or behaviour or disorderly behaviour, thereby causing that person or another harassment, alarm or distress. Contrary to Section 4A(1) and (5) of the Public Order Act 1986.

The court also heard that Lane had in his possession 25g of Cannabis a controlled drug of class B in contravention of section 5(1) of the Misuse of Drugs Act 1971. Contrary to section 5(2) of and Schedule 4 to the Misuse of Drugs Act 1971.

Lane pleaded guilty to both charges. 

He was committed to prison for 4 weeks because the offence was aggravated by the defendant’s record of previous offending, because the offence was committed during the operational period of a suspended sentence.

The overall length of the sentence was 16 weeks.

Lane was ordered to pay  a surcharge to fund victim services of £154 and to pay costs of £85 to the Crown Prosecution Service.

The defendant’s guilty plea was taken into account during sentencing.

The cannabis was forfeited under section 27 of the Misuse of Drugs Act 1971 and destroyed.
