A deli is hoping to expand its business into a new restaurant to help boost the “vitality and viability” of a Gwynedd resort town. Porc Mewn Picl on Porthmadog High Street has applied to Cyngor Gwynedd for planning permission to convert its premises.
Council’s planners received a full application for the change of use of the delicatessen’s ground floor from Use Class A1 (Shops) to Use Class A3 (restaurant, cafe). The application has been made on behalf of Dafydd Edwyn Jones, by agent Gwyn Pritchard of Ty Newydd Cyf. The deli is located in the main shopping area within Portmadog’s busy town centre and the application comprises a ground floor retail unit.
The applicant wanted to use the ground floor unit as a restaurant/cafe. Mr Pritchard stated: “This will enable the existing successful business to expand and allow its products to be consumed on or off the premises, which will maintain the vitality and viability of the town centre. Those visiting the cafe would also be able to carry out linked trips with other shops and services in the town centre, in line with sustainability objectives.
“This would provide an overall benefit in terms of the range of uses and activities in the centre.”
The proposal does not involve the development of additional floor space within the building, and the general public will access the unit from the front double doors, a design and access statement noted. Mr Pritchard, in the application, also stated the plans would create “employment opportunities contributing to economic development objectives”.
