Today, the UK Government has committed to £5 million of Levelling Up funding for the Newport Transporter Bridge in South Wales.
The cash boost will fund vital repair and maintenance works to Newport Transporter Bridge, which plays a crucial role in the tourism economy as a visitor attraction in South Wales.
The funding will be critical in showcasing Wales as a leader in culture and tourism, bringing in visitors from across the globe. Just as importantly, this will help drive growth across Newport by supporting jobs and putting money back into the pockets of residents.
Unlike the previous Conservative Government, who made several unfunded Levelling Up commitments, this government is putting pounds behind broken Tory promises and putting money into the Levelling Up Funding pot. This Labour Government, working in partnership with the Welsh Government, is delivering for the people of Wales.
Secretary of State for Wales Jo Stevens said:
“The Newport Transporter Bridge and Venue Cymru are iconic landmarks in their local communities, and I am very pleased that this UK Government funding will be used to boost Wales’ already world leading tourism and culture sectors.
“Unlike the last Tory Government, whose £22 billion in unfunded commitments left these developments at risk, our investment in these two fantastic projects is an example of how our Plan for Change will lead to a decade of national renewal for people the length and breadth of Wales.
“I am delighted that Wales now has two Labour Governments committed to the regeneration and economic growth that will put more money in people’s pockets. This is a partnership in power that will continue to deliver for the people of Wales.”
Jessica Morden, MP for Newport East, said:
“People from far and wide know and love the Transporter Bridge. It is an iconic part of Newport’s skyline.
“So I am extremely pleased to see this UK Labour Government recognizing how important our local tourism sector is to our mission of growth, and investing in the Transporter Bridge to secure it as a key tourist destination for years to come.”
Jayne Bryant, MS for Newport West, said:
“The Transporter Bridge is iconic in Newport and across Wales. A part of our industrial heritage and, thanks to the investment, a part of our future.
“This funding from the UK Labour Government adds to the investment already committed by both the Welsh Labour Government and the Labour-led council and others. It will be a place to welcome many more visitors to our City to take the gondola across the Usk.”
