Thousands of trains to be provided for fans ahead of Bristol Bears vs Bath Rugby game in Cardiff

Almost 10,000 extra train seats are being provided for rugby fans heading to Cardiff for the hotly-anticipated Big Day Out on Saturday May 10, as Bristol Bears take on Bath Rugby at the Principality Stadium.
Eight extra trains will depart from Bristol Temple Meads to Cardiff Central for Bears fans, while Bath supporters will be able to take advantage of five extra trains from Bath and Chippenham to Cardiff, not calling at Bristol Temple Meads.

Great Western Railway will run a heavily amended service; reservations will be required on all trains after 0800 towards Cardiff (whether travelling for the rugby or not) and trains will not stop at Bristol Parkway.

Those travelling from the north of Bristol will need to travel to Bristol Temple Meads for direct services to/from Cardiff.

Kick off for Bristol Bears v Bath Rugby at the Principality is at 1505. With trains already quickly filling up, those looking to travel are encouraged to book early and allow plenty of time for their journey.

In total, almost 20 trains will leave Bristol Temple Meads for Cardiff before the game, and a further 11 separate trains from Bath.

GWR will continue to operate connecting services to Temple Meads from surrounding areas, including Taunton and Weston-super-Mare.

How do I get home again?

After the game, more than 20 trains are being provided back towards Bristol Temple Meads, Bath Spa and beyond.

A queuing system will be in place on a first-come-first served service basis for the return trip and supporters should consider delaying their return from Cardiff Central to avoid waiting too long. Queues will be separated into end destinations to ensure customers can get the correct train home as quickly and efficiently as possible.

GWR Director of Operations Richard Rowland said:

“To support both Bristol Bears and Bath Rugby, as well as our other customers, there will be some significant changes to our usual train service on Saturday 10 May to be aware of.

“Extra trains are being provided from Bristol Temple Meads for Bristol fans and from Chippenham and Bath for Bath supporters for their Big Day Out. These trains will be reservation only.

“GWR services that would usually call at Bristol Parkway will not do so, and those seeking to travel from north Bristol to south Wales should travel to Temple Meads for direct services towards Cardiff.

“Services are however still expected to be really busy, and we advise people to travel early and to check before you travel. A queueing system will also be in place at Cardiff station after the game, ensuring people can board their train safely.”

Tickets for trains are selling out quickly, with some trains already close to capacity. Book your train now.

Engineering works in the Gloucester area may also impact some journeys, and customers are advised to check before they travel.
