Dŵr Cymru Welsh Water invites the community to an Elan Valley Lakes project stakeholder and community engagement day

Under the ambitious £21.7 million Elan Valley Lakes project, funding is being sought from the Mid Wales Growth Deal to support a transformational 5-year development. Dŵr Cymru will make a significant financial contribution to the capital investment of the project.

In April the Growing Mid Wales Board granted approval of the Outline Business Case (OBC) for the Elan Valley Lakes project. This decision marks a major milestone for the Growth Deal and Elan Valley, as the first project to get the green light to advance to Full Business Case (FBC), the final stage of the bid development process.

This significant step towards securing funding from the Mid Wales Growth Deal has enabled us to mobilise phase one of the project – the redevelopment of the visitor centre. We are delighted to have appointed renowned architectural firm Ray Hole Associates as our architects, who have been instrumental in translating our vision and needs into a detailed outline plan for phase one.

The draft visitor centre plans include panoramic views of Caban Coch Dam from the cafe; together with a new spacious reception and inviting retail space, planetarium and exhibition. The centre will also include a teaching kitchen to help with apprenticeship programs.

We are pleased to announce that Ray Hole will be joining us on Saturday 3rd August between 10am to 3:30pm at the visitor centre, where you can view the draft plans, chat to Ray and Elan Valley staff, and give us your important feedback before we move forward with applying for planning permission at Powys Council.

The Elan Valley Lakes Project aligns with the Growth Deal strategic growth priorities in delivering sustainable tourism. It will help position the Mid Wales region as a must-see visitor destination, with world-class visitor facilities. It will also minimise environmental impact through low-carbon development and the use of renewable energy sources, which will contribute to Dŵr Cymru’s path to achieving net zero emissions. Another significant focus involves restoring and expanding the rare and fragile Celtic Rainforest in the Elan Valley, by connecting and restoring fragmented areas to enhance biodiversity.
