An exciting new Welsh-language stage adaptation of Islwyn Ffowc Elis’s iconic 1957 science-fiction novel Wythnos yng Nghymru Fydd (A Week in Future Wales) will come to Lyric Theatre, Carmarthen on 13 October 2026 as part of a national tour by Welsh theatre company Frân Wen, in collaboration with Galeri.
Adapted by Mared Llywelyn Williams and directed by Frân Wen Artistic Director Gethin Evans, the production brings one of Wales’ most significant literary works to the stage for a new generation.
First published in 1957, Wythnos yng Nghymru Fydd is widely recognised as the first adult science-fiction novel written in Welsh. The story explores identity, language, belonging and the future of Wales through the extraordinary journey of Ifan, who is thrown decades into the future – twice.
One future offers a free Wales filled with love and hope. The other is a bleak world without language, borders or community. In both worlds, there is Mair.
The production features a leading Welsh cast including Garmon Rhys (Gangs of London, Craith / Hidden, Tina: The Musical) and Lois Elenid (Craith, Y Gens), alongside Siôn Eifion (Romeo and Juliet, Shakespeare’s Globe), Sam Reeves (Jasmin Vardimon Company) and Morfudd Hughes (Ledi’r Wyrcws).
The production is particularly timely in its exploration of what Wales might become, and the choices we make to shape its future.
Playwright, Mared Llywelyn said:
“In a world where extremism manifests every day, this play puts the spotlight directly on that reality. Adapting such an iconic novel is a thrilling challenge, but its central question is more urgent than ever: what can we, as individuals, do to shape our future?”
Gethin Evans, Artistic Director of Frân Wen added:
“Islwyn Ffowc Elis’s novel is central to Wales’s literary identity, and reimagining it today feels both important and timely. Mared brings the exact voice, energy, and vision this masterpiece deserves for a modern stage. We can’t wait to share this work with audiences across the country.”
