The Welsh Blood Service is preparing to face Winter pressures on its services and so we are hoping our Christmas campaign, ‘the best gift’, will help raise awareness about the importance of donating blood, platelets or bone marrow and the lifesaving difference it makes.
Blood products have a short shelf life and are needed by hospitals 365 days a year, including Christmas day, to help support patients in need, which is why we can’t stop collecting. We need to build up blood stocks ahead of a potentially challenging winter, where seasonal illnesses such as flu and Covid-19 may exacerbate the usual winter pressures faced by the NHS.
Today I am delighted to share with you our media release to launch our Christmas campaign/appeal to the general public to give someone ‘the best gift’ this Christmas and New Year by giving blood or by signing up to join our bone marrow donor registry panel.
The campaign is supported by new mother, Stacey Fordham Gray who needed a lifesaving blood transfusion during the birth of her daughter, Millie.
Thanks to the generosity of blood donors Stacey is looking forward to celebrating Christmas with Millie and her family and we hope that by sharing her story and explaining why it is so important we must continue to collect blood communities across Wales will consider making a lifesaving blood donation or sign up to join our bone marrow registry panel and give ‘the best gift’ this festive season.
