The council has been successful in its application for a grant under Wrexham’s Shared Prosperity Fund and is now seeking bids to carry our renovation work on the toilets at the community centre, which are public facilities available for all.
The plans to invest in the loos comes at a time when the future of many public conveniences remains uncertain as local authorities wrestle with ever-tightening budgets.
But the George Edwards Hall has been putting community first for over 100 years and Cefn Community Council is now inviting bids from contractors to completely renovate the toilets to to make them safe, accessible, and suitable for continuing community use.
Opened in 1911 with a £1,000 donation from the will of Johann Hamilton Edwards – George Edwards’ widow – the hall was intended to ‘be used for entertainment and meetings of a high class character for the purpose of elevating the people’.
With its stage, seating areas and balconies it has been a silent cinema, home to Cefn Operatic Society and hosted welcome home parties for soldiers after both world wars.
The hall’s basement was even used as a bomb shelter during World War II.
Today it remains a popular venue for community activities from dance clubs to slimming clubs.
According to the tender documents published on the Sell2Wales portal, the grant funding is expected to pay for the old toilets to be completely stripped out.
New plumbing will be installed and four new cubicle blocks built, with all internal fixtures replaced.
The estimated time for works to be completed is four to six weeks.
