Residents Urged to Avoid Travel Amid Worsening Flood Conditions in Carmarthenshire

Residents of Carmarthenshire and motorists are being strongly advised not to travel in and around Carmarthen and other low-lying areas of Carmarthenshire due to rising river levels and surface flooding caused by continuous heavy rainfall.

Flood warnings have been issued for the River Towy, including the Carmarthen Quay and Old Llangunnor Road areas, as well as several other river catchments across the county. Sections of the A484, particularly the riverside stretch near the River Towy and Afon Duad, are experiencing significant flooding, with reports of water breaching the carriageway and vehicles becoming stranded.

Key Warnings and Safety Information

  • Do not travel unless absolutely essential. Conditions remain dangerous and unpredictable, especially near rivers, bridges, and low-lying rural roads.

  • Avoid the A484 and adjacent river routes. Rising water levels are cutting off sections of road and making travel unsafe.

  • Do not drive through floodwater. Even shallow water can disable a vehicle or cause it to be swept away.

  • If you are in immediate danger, call 999.

  • Stay informed via the Met Office for the latest weather warnings and forecasts.

Residents Advised to Take Immediate Precautions

Residents living near rivers or in flood-prone areas are urged to prepare for potential flooding:

  • Move valuables, pets, and important documents to higher ground or upper floors.

  • Keep a grab-bag ready with essentials such as medication, warm clothing, a torch, and a phone charger.

  • Avoid walking through floodwater; it may conceal hazards such as open drains or strong currents.

  • Secure outdoor items and check on vulnerable neighbours where it is safe to do so.

Emergency services and flood-risk management teams across Carmarthenshire are on standby to respond to incidents and monitor flood defences.
