Ysgol Ffwrnes is celebrating an exceptional week of achievements after winning two prestigious awards at the Climate Challenge Cymru celebration, taking top honours in both the Revive Our Oceans and Fix Our Climate categories.
As part of Climate Challenge Cymru, primary and secondary schools across Wales were invited to submit short videos showcasing creative solutions to one of five global environmental challenges, or ‘Earthshots’: Build a Waste-Free World, Clean Our Air, Fix Our Climate, Protect and Restore Nature, and Revive Our Oceans.
The awards were presented at a special celebration event at Techniquest, where pupils were joined by special guests including Will Millard, nature campaigner Joe Wilkins and Morfudd Meredith.
Judges praised Ysgol Ffwrnes’ work on seagrass habitats and eco-moorings to help restore marine ecosystems, as well as their exploration of local food production as a way of reducing carbon emissions and tackling climate change.
The pupils have also demonstrated remarkable leadership by chairing a meeting of the Carmarthenshire Climate Action Group at the school, welcoming councillors, local primary schools and guest speakers to discuss environmental action and sustainability.
To round off an incredible week, the school received the fantastic news that it has been awarded the Eco-Schools Platinum Flag – the highest accolade within the international Eco-Schools programme. Platinum Status is awarded to schools that have demonstrated a sustained commitment to environmental education and sustainability by achieving the prestigious Green Flag Award on four occasions.
Rebecca Nia Griffiths said:
“We are absolutely thrilled by these achievements. It is wonderful to see how the small differences made by every child, every class and every member of staff combine to make such a significant impact. Our young people are our future, and it is clear that the future is in very safe hands.
These awards, together with achieving Eco-Schools Platinum Status, reflect the passion, commitment and determination shown by our pupils every day. We are immensely proud of them all.”
