Are you looking to break into the fast-paced world of digital media? Carmarthenshire News Online, a pioneer in independent hyperlocal news for Wales, is seeking a passionate, driven Volunteer Intern to join our newsroom.
This is not a “make the coffee” internship. You will be working directly alongside the Editor, getting boots-on-the-ground experience, and playing an active role in local accountability and community reporting.
What You Will Learn & Experience

This role is designed to equip you with a robust, multi-platform portfolio that will make your CV stand out to major media employers. You will gain hands-on training and develop skills across the entire modern multimedia spectrum:
Digital Journalism & Content Creation: Learn the art of local investigative reporting, structuring breaking news stories, and writing clean, compelling copy under real-world deadlines.
Audio & Video Production: Get technical training in filming, recording, and editing digital packages. You will learn to use modern production tools to create engaging multimedia news content.
Press Photography: Master the basics of photojournalism, capturing the images that tell the story behind the headlines.
Audience Engagement: Understand how a modern digital news site operates, tracks metrics, and engages a community.
What We Are Looking For
This role is ideal for a student or recent graduate of Journalism, Media Production, or Multimedia studies who wants to bridge the gap between theory and practical, real-world industry experience.
Key Attributes:
Strong Communicator: A good command of English and/or Welsh (bilingual skills are highly valued in our community).
Confident & Presentable: Comfortable interviewing members of the public, local business owners, and officials.
Tech-Savvy: Eager to learn and work with modern digital editing, audio, and video tools.
Driven: A proactive attitude with a genuine curiosity for local news and stories that matter to the people of Carmarthenshire.
Future Prospects
The media industry is highly competitive, and employers look for candidates who have proven they can deliver in a real newsroom environment. By working closely with an experienced media professional, you will receive direct mentorship, feedback on your work, and a reference that carries weight. You will leave this internship with a diverse portfolio of published articles, video packages, and audio clips.
