A planning application has been submitted to Denbighshire County Council’s planning department to create 10 motorhome parking bays at a Prestatyn car park.
The application proposes a change of use at the Lower Barkby Car Park on Barkby Avenue to provide short-stay overnight parking for motorhomes.
The scheme would involve reconfiguring part of the existing public car park to accommodate the 10 bays, together with associated infrastructure.
It also includes new or altered vehicle and pedestrian access, a connection to the existing mains sewer system, and dedicated waste and recycling storage.
The application states that the foul drainage would be connected to the mains sewer adjacent to the existing toilet block.
The applicant is Denbighshire County Council’s highways and environmental services department, with the site covering approximately 0.19 hectares.
A planning statement said there had been a significant growth in motorhome ownership in the UK since the pandemic, with the county having “numerous hot-spot locations”.
The report said: “The Denbighshire Motorhome ‘Aires’ project is the result of detailed research and background work over the last 18 months, to try and address the issues that occur within Denbighshire of motorhomes parking overnight in unauthorised locations.
“The Aires project is not to compete with existing holiday parks but is a pilot project for very basic, short-stay (two nights maximum) overnight parking for motorhomes on car parks which are located adjacent to towns and existing facilities.
“Denbighshire Council has a wide range of car parks throughout the county that offer safe and affordable parking. Motorhomes are allowed to park in car parks where there are no height restrictions installed. However, overnight stays are not permitted.”
The report added: “Assessments have been undertaken on numerous locations within Denbighshire to identify suitable sites where the Aires project could be trialled. This has involved site visits and consultations with specialists to assist Denbighshire County Council with formulating and developing the Motorhome Aires project.”
Six car parks across Denbighshire have been earmarked for the new ‘Aires’ motorhome scheme.
The designated locations include Quay Street Car Park and Marine Drive (East Parade) in Rhyl, Lower Barkby Car Park in Prestatyn, Park Road Car Park in Ruthin, Mill Street Car Park in Llangollen, and Green Lane Car Park in Corwen.
The plans will likely be discussed at a future Denbighshire County Council planning committee meeting.
