The Welsh Ambulance Service is urging people across Wales to enjoy Halloween safely and responsibly as health services prepare for one of the busiest periods of the year.
Last year, between 31 October and 5 November, the Trust received 7,070 emergency 999 calls and a further 13,841 calls to NHS 111 Wales, highlighting the significant pressure on healthcare services during the Halloween and Bonfire Night period.
Paul Underwood, Deputy Chief Operating Officer at the Welsh Ambulance Service, said:
“Halloween is a fun and exciting time for many people, but it’s also one of our busiest periods.
“Our teams work around the clock to respond to those who need urgent care, so we’re asking everyone to celebrate responsibly and only call 999 if someone is seriously ill or injured, or their life is at risk.
“By taking a few simple precautions, we can all help make Halloween safer for everyone.”
Top Halloween Safety Tips:
Be Seen, Be Safe
Choose bright costumes or add reflective strips to improve visibility, particularly near roads. Carry a torch or use your phone’s light when walking in dark areas.
Keep Children Safe
Young trick-or-treaters should always be accompanied by a responsible adult. Stick to well-lit streets and familiar neighbourhoods.
Watch Out on the Roads
Drivers should take extra care on Halloween night, when more children and families are out and about. Slow down, follow speed limits and remain alert at all times.
Swap Candles for LEDs
Battery-powered LED lights provide a safer alternative to candles and can help reduce the risk of fires and burns.
Consider Face Paint Instead of Masks
Face paint can be a safer option than masks, helping to improve visibility and awareness. It’s also important to be mindful that Halloween activities may be unsettling for some vulnerable members of the community.
Celebrate Responsibly
If you’re attending or hosting a Halloween party, drink responsibly and plan your journey home in advance. Arrange a designated driver, book transport or consider alcohol-free alternatives.
Paul added:
“Please remember that 999 is for serious or life-threatening emergencies only.
“For non-urgent medical advice and support, visit NHS 111 Wales online, contact your GP or speak to your local pharmacist.
“By working together and making sensible choices, everyone can have a fun, safe and spooktacular Halloween.”
