Llanelli MP Nia Griffith pledges to ‘Act for Climate and Nature’ as part of WWF’s Earth Hour

Dame Nia Griffith, Member of Parliament for Llanelli, has pledged that it’s time to act for climate and nature as part of WWF’s Earth Hour, one of the largest events to protect the planet.

On Saturday 28 March at 8.30pm campaigners around the world united in support of people and the planet and iconic UK landmarks switched off their lights in a show of solidarity.

Its impact has gone far beyond just turning off lights for one hour.Earth Hour has become a time for many to switch off from distractions and focus on nature.

A devastating threequartersofglobalwildlife populations have been lost in the last fifty years and WWF iscalling on politicians to show their commitment totackling the drivers of biodiversity loss and ramp up ambition for its restoration.

Nature is an essential life support system. When we work with nature and not against it, we have cleanerair to breathe, better water to drink, and healthier food to eat. Scientific research shows that time spent in nature makes us happier and healthier.

Dame Nia Griffith MP said:

“We all depend on nature and a stable climate.

They give us the clean air, fresh water and healthy food our families need. Yet they are under threat.  We can and must protect our natural world.

So many of my constituents are clear that addressing the impacts of climate change and restoring nature is important to them.  I will continue to work with local communities here in Llanelli and with colleagues across all parties to ensure we leave the world in a better state for future generations.”

David Walsh, Head of Public Affairs at WWF, said:

“The UK is in the top 10% of the most nature depleted countries in the world, but together we can make the changes necessary to bring our natural world back to life.

We’re delighted to see MPs from across the UK give their support to WWF’s Earth Hour and pledge to protect our planet. We hope they will champion nature, both in Parliament and within their communities, inspiring their constituents and colleagues to take action to restore nature.”
