Women’s touch rugby players hope to get cancer appeal over the line

Swansea Bay Health Charity hopes its second annual touch rugby tournament will get it over a major fundraising goal line.

Touched by Cancer – an all-women’s touch rugby tournament that unites local teams across Swansea Bay – will take place at Ystradgynlais RFC on Saturday, 8th August.

The inaugural tournament, held last year at Aberavon RFC’s Talbot Athletic ground, raised an incredible £24,000 toward the charity’s Going the Extra Mile for Cancer appeal – and, as things stand, it’s only £20K short of its £200K target.

Each of the 20 teams taking part has pledged to raise at least £500 towards the appeal, which aims to refurbish and enhance the South West Wales Cancer Centre at Singleton Hospital, creating a brighter, more comfortable outpatient space for patients and their families.

Ystradgynlais RFC’s Club Secretary, Daniel Holsgrove, said they were keen to work with the charity by hosting the tournament in 2026, having an emotional connection to the cause.

He said: “We are truly honoured to host the Touched by Cancer tournament.

“Sadly, cancer has brought heartache to so many families across our rugby communities. Together with the other participating clubs, we are proud to take on the challenge of raising a substantial amount of money for this life changing charity.

“Building on the success of last year’s tournament, we are committed to maintaining the high standards that were set. We look forward to welcoming so many fantastic teams to Ystradgynlais and celebrating the ever-growing game of women’s touch rugby.

“We’re already incredibly excited for what promises to be an amazing occasion filled with rugby, enthusiasm and solidarity.”

While rugby will be at the heart of the event, the day is about much more than sport.

Cathy Stevens, Community Support Charity Officer at Swansea Bay Health Charity, said: “Many players, supporters and volunteers have personal connections to cancer. Among those attending will be cancer survivors, patients currently receiving treatment, family members, friends and those remembering loved ones they have lost.

“Their stories and experiences are a powerful reminder of why the appeal matters so much to communities across South Wales and beyond.

“The appeal is proudly supported by local legend Kev Johns MBE, who has experienced the care provided at Singleton Hospital first-hand and has been a passionate advocate for improving cancer services for local people. Swansea Bay Health Charity hope Kev will be able to join the big day.

“With competitive rugby, family-friendly entertainment, local traders, delicious food and the opportunity to help reach a major fundraising milestone, the Touched by Cancer tournament is set to be one of the community events of the summer!”

Off field entertainment includes an all-day DJ alongside a raffle and auction while organisers hope to announce a concert from a surprise rugby star band, from 5pm, in the coming weeks alongside several celebrity ambassadors.

Gates open at 10am with the tournament kicking off at 11am and the final set to start at 3.15pm. Entry is just £5 for adults with children admitted for free.

Cathy added: “Whether you come to cheer on your local team, enjoy the atmosphere or support an important cause, everyone is welcome. Together, our local community could help take the Going the Extra Mile for Cancer Appeal over the £200,000 finish line.”
