MORE than £2,600 has been raised for Armed Forces charity Help for Heroes by three schools that were inspired by April’s Month of the Military Child.
SSCE Cymru (Supporting Service Children in Education in Wales) worked alongside the Charity’s Community Fundraising Manager, Rhys Edwards, on the ‘Purple Up’ and social impact project with Ysgol Bae Baglan (Port Talbot), Ysgol Pen Y Bryn (Conwy), and Haverfordwest High VC School.
The project encouraged service children, young people and their peers to raise awareness, take positive action and fundraise in support of Help for Heroes.
At Ysgol Bae Baglan, pupils completed two sponsored fun runs, and a walk up Pen y Fan; Children from Ysgol Pen y Bryn completed a range of fundraising activities before the whole school came together for a celebration day of activities delivered by Character Education Life Skills (CELS).
And at Haverfordwest High VC School, military children, families and ‘buddies’ took part in a sponsored tree planting project in the school grounds. With support from Hero Bear, The VC Gallery and Haverfordwest Rotary Club, pupils made a lasting contribution to their school environment and wider community.

Your contribution helped make this Month of the Military Child project a meaningful success, celebrating the positive impact of service children and young people.
“We are also proud that all three schools hold an SSCE Cymru Gold Armed Forces Friendly Schools status, recognising their continued commitment to the Armed Forces community.”
Edwards added: “It has been a privilege to work with Jo and the team on this project. Thank you to everyone from all three schools for the effort they have put into their individual activities.
“At Help for Heroes, we always say it does not matter what you do, just do something. Do something that interests you, perhaps steps you outside your comfort zone, and feels fun and invigorating.
“We are delighted that the three schools have already stated their intent to do further fundraising in 2027. And, wonderfully, they are to be joined by a fourth school in their efforts: Cefn Saeson Comprehensive School, in Neath.
Help for Heroes champions the Armed Forces community and helps people live well after service. The Charity supports veterans and their families with their physical and mental health, as well as welfare and social needs. It has already supported tens of thousands – and won’t stop until every veteran gets the support they deserve.
The Charity supports veterans – and their families – from any branch of the UK military, regular or reserves, irrespective of length or place of service, and local civilians (and their families) working under the command of the UK Armed Forces.
