Agrisgôp Group Focuses on Supporting Farmers’ Wellbeing

An Agrisgôp group, led by Rhian Jones, who is also a Regional Champion for the DPJ Foundation, brought together nine farmers from a mix of beef, sheep, dairy and poultry enterprises to explore how to improve mental health within the farming community.
As one of Farming Connect’s longest-running services, Agrisgôp has been supporting farmers and growers since 2003 to work together to solve real business challenges. This fully funded, farmer-led service brings small groups of like-minded individuals together to develop ideas, explore opportunities, and drive projects forward in a supportive and practical environment.

Through a combination of peer discussion, practical activities and expert input, members of the group shared personal experiences and identified common stressors, while developing coping strategies such as increasing social interaction, physical activity, and adopting more positive mindsets.

Rhian Jones says “The group worked well together to support and encourage change.  I think hearing from each other and the industry experts gave the group members valuable insight into what improves someone’s mental health.”

One group member, Ffion Hooson, who has a mixed livestock farm says that before joining the group she found things “quite overwhelming at times”, adding that farming can be “mentally tough, with long hours, financial pressures, and the constant responsibility that comes with looking after livestock. It can also feel quite lonely, especially when most of your work is done on your own.”

The group took part in a range of practical sessions, including visiting a farm-based fitness initiative, trying mindfulness techniques, and exploring the role of diet, hydration, and lifestyle changes in supporting wellbeing. Guest speakers provided insights into resilience, behaviour change, counselling, and mental health awareness, alongside guidance on recognising signs of poor mental health and supporting others.

Throughout the programme, members reflected on their own behaviours, set personal action points, and trialled new approaches such as gym sessions, yoga and improved nutrition. For Ffion, one of the most significant changes was joining a gym after recognising she needed something outside of the farm that was just for herself.

“Joining the gym felt like a positive step towards improving both my physical health and my mental wellbeing.  Exercise has given me a way to clear my head and step away from the day-to-day pressures of farming, even if it’s only for a short time. Physically I feel stronger and have more energy, and mentally it has helped boost my mood and confidence.”

The group also developed skills in listening, questioning and opening conversations, helping to build confidence in discussing mental health. Reflecting on the value of the group, Ffion says “Being able to talk openly with others who face the same challenges helped me realise I wasn’t alone in how I was feeling.” She added that the supportive environment encouraged members to share experiences and take small positive steps to improve their wellbeing.

Overall, the group combined shared learning and practical action to help participants better understand and manage their own mental health, while strengthening their ability to support others within the farming community.

Looking back on her experience, Ffion says she now feels “more positive and more aware of the importance of looking after my own wellbeing. Taking those small steps—joining the group, talking more openly, and making time for exercise—has helped me feel more balanced and better able to deal with the challenges that come with farming.”

She believes that looking after your mental health is just as important as looking after the farm and small changes or reaching out to others can make a big difference.

Rhian Jones added, “It’s great to see how some members of the group have made positive changes to improve their own mental health since being part of the Agrisgôp.”
