Gareth Beer MS Demands Urgent Action From Carmarthenshire County Council Following Pendine Wildfires

CARMARTHENSHIRE, WALES — Gareth Beer, Member of the Senedd (MS) for Sir Gaerfyrddin, has today called on Carmarthenshire County Council to take immediate steps regarding the escalating crisis of rural vandalism and severe wildfire threats across our coastal and heritage sites. The recent ten-hectare blaze at Morfa Bychan came dangerously close to destroying an 11,000-volt power line and a vital local water pumping station, averted only by the heroic manual intervention of local farmers and emergency fire crews.

Gareth Beer MS commented: “People across Sir Gaerfyrddin are sick and tired of chronic inaction and ignored community concerns. Whether in Carmarthen, Llanelli, or our rural villages, local communities deserve robust protection of our natural heritage and critical infrastructure rather than endless bureaucratic excuses.

“I am urging council executives to listen to residents and deliver immediate, practical solutions rather than empty promises.”

The ongoing enforcement vacuum has allowed illegal camping, chainsaw destruction of protected timber, and unauthorised waste disposal to run rampant across a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) land and CADW-protected scheduled ancient monuments. Enacting an emergency Temporary Traffic Regulation Order is the crucial first step to empower police and secure these vulnerable areas against further devastation.

The community council’s formal submission today highlights that while local police attempted to clear individuals during the emergency, the lack of a specific traffic restriction left officers without effective enforcement mechanisms. Furthermore, with community council funds heavily committed to local services, Carmarthenshire County Council must absorb the associated order costs in the wider public interest. Supported by local representatives and the National Trust as landowner, this emergency measure is the essential first step toward long-term stability.

Gareth Beer MS will be pressing the traffic management team to establish immediate lawful restrictions and fair exemptions for essential access.
