A major section of the A40 in Carmarthenshire has been closed in both directions this evening following a “serious” collision between a coach and a van.
The incident, which occurred at approximately 16:30 BST today (Friday, July 3), has completely shut the busy Llandeilo to Nantgaredig road.
Emergency services, including a heavy police presence and an air ambulance, rushed to the scene. The road remains closed in both directions from Carmarthen Road in Llandeilo down to Pentrefelin.
Major Emergency Response
A significant multi-agency rescue operation was initiated immediately following the crash. The response at the scene includes:
-
Dyfed-Powys Police: Multiple units remain at the site to manage the closure and initiate a formal collision investigation.
-
Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service: Fire crews attended to secure the vehicles. A small fire broke out immediately after the impact but was quickly brought under control and extinguished. Fire engines were seen leaving the site later in the evening.
-
Welsh Ambulance Service & Wales Air Ambulance: Paramedics provided emergency care at the scene. The air ambulance has since completed its medical deployment and returned to base.
A white transit van and the Ffoshelig coach remain at the roadside while recovery work and investigations continue. Passersby who witnessed the immediate aftermath of the crash stopped their vehicles to assist those involved before emergency crews arrived.
Travel Disruption and Investigation
Dyfed-Powys Police have strongly advised motorists to avoid the entire area and seek alternative routes, as the closure is impacting a vital artery in south-west Wales.
A police spokesperson confirmed that the A40 will remain closed from Llandeilo to Pentrefelin until specialised collision investigation teams complete their enquiries.
Ffoshelig Coaches, a well-known operator primarily servicing local schools in the Carmarthenshire area, has declined to comment on the incident at this time. No official update on the condition or number of casualties has been released by medical authorities.
Carmarthenshire News Online will continue to update this story as official statements are released.
