Red Card for Anti-Social Behaviour as Police and Cardiff City FC Team Up

South Wales Police and Cardiff City FC have teamed up to tackle anti-social behaviour on match days.

Operation Goal aims to identify people involved in such behaviour and take appropriate action.

Action could range from educational and diversionary activities at the club to Football Banning Orders.

Superintendent Emma Fox, from South Wales Police, said:“The Cardiff City Stadium provides a safe, welcoming, and family-friendly environment, and most people who attend matches behave responsibly.

“However, we have seen recent incidents of anti-social behaviour, often involving groups of young people.

“Incidents have been outside the stadium and surroundings areas, including the city centre, before and after home games.

“Operation Goal is a partnership approach designed to engage specifically with these young supporters, ensure their welfare, and put a stop to this behaviour.”

Examples of anti-social behaviour have included mask wearing, intimidation in large groups, items being thrown, and under-age drinking.

Working together, South Wales Police and Cardiff City Football Club are committed to identifying those responsible, reviewing incidents and taking appropriate action.

Depending on the circumstances, action could include:

  • Advice, warnings and engagement with individuals and families
  • Referral to support or diversionary programmes
  • Legal action where criminal offences have been committed
  • Withdrawal of matchday tickets
  • Restrictions on attending away fixtures
  • Football Banning Orders

A Cardiff City FC Spokesperson said: “We want supporters of all ages to enjoy our matches in a safe, welcoming, and positive environment.

“To help achieve this, we are working with South Wales Police to address incidents of anti-social behaviour linked to matchdays.

“As always, we ask supporters to treat fellow fans, staff, residents and businesses with respect, follow the guidance of police, stewards and event staff, speak up if you witness behaviour that causes concern and help create a positive atmosphere that reflects the values of CCFC.”
