Stronger starts grant gives riding access to Dinefwr’s children

Children and young people of all ages and abilities in Dinefwr will have the chance to experience what it is like to be a horse rider thanks to a little help from Tesco and a local charity.

Dinefwr Riding Group in Carmarthenshire received £1,500 from Tesco’s Stronger Starts scheme to provide children and young people with the chance to learn how to ride a pony and horse.

This opportunity –voted for by the community at nearby Tesco stores – is open to all children regardless of disability or disorder.

In order to have achieved this, the charity has used the Tesco grant to subsidise the riding lessons for youngsters from all backgrounds.
Ellen Gladders, volunteer at Dinefwr Riding Group, said: “Seeing the smiles on the faces of these children as they connect with the horses is truly heartwarming.

“We are incredibly grateful to the local community for voting for Dinefwr Riding School to receive the grant. Their support means we can now offer riding lessons to absolutely everyone, no matter their age or abilities.

“It’s amazing to see how horse riding helps children with physical challenges build strength, while those with autism often find it incredibly calming and it helps them engage more easily afterwards.

“This wouldn’t be possible without the generosity and support of our local residents.”

The Dinefwr Riding Group is a national charity founded in 1989. Since then, the family-run business and charity can be found in over 140 acres of farmland nestled in the beautiful foothills of the Black Mountains.

Abled-bodied children and children living with disabilities and disorders will be able to participate in these lessons every Wednesday during the school term time.

With the majority of children coming to Riding for the Disabled through special needs schools or the local council, the team of 13 volunteers are able to engage with local children who are dealing with difficult issues, from muscular issues to autism.

Claire de Silva, Head of Community at Tesco, said: “We are delighted to assist the Dinefwr Riding Group in their incredible work providing riding opportunities and fostering positive experiences for people of all ages and abilities.

“Supporting groups like Dinefwr through our Stronger Starts grant reflects our commitment to building stronger, healthier communities together.
“We are proud to support local organizations that make a real difference in their communities.”

Carmarthenshire shoppers can support local schools and children’s groups by dropping the Stronger Starts blue token they receive at a Tesco checkout into the relevant voting box as they leave the store.

Tesco’s Stronger Starts scheme, in partnership with the Groundwork charity, supports many community projects and good causes in the Carmarthenshire area and beyond, giving away thousands of pounds.
