Carmarthenshire County Council has today (Wednesday 10 June 2026) agreed proposals to expand access to early years education at its meeting of Full Council by changing the age range from 4-11 to 3-11 at four primary schools across the county.
The changes will enable children from three years of age to access part-time, funded nursery education in areas where current provision is limited in Ysgol Y Ddwylan, Ysgol Cwrt Henri, Ysgol Gymraeg Y Tymbl, Ysgol Llanybydder.
To meet demand for part-time nursery education and wraparound childcare in areas where there is limited non-maintained provision, these schools will be redesignated as 3-11 schools. This will allow them to offer a minimum of 10 hours per week of non-statutory, part-time early years education to help address any gaps in provision and ensure fairer access to early years education across the county.
This decision follows a period of formal consultation with pupils, parents, teachers, governors and the wider school communities from 4 September to 16 October 2025.
Carmarthenshire County Council’s Cabinet Member for Education, Cllr Glynog Davies, said:
“Today’s decision will help to ensure that all children in Carmarthenshire have fair and equal access to early years education, regardless of where they live and will extend the availability of part-time nursery education and wraparound childcare in these areas.”
