Cymdeithas yr Iaith “surprised” at Council’s Decision to Close two Primary Schools

Cymdeithas yr Iaith has stated that itis surprised at Carmarthenshire County Council’s decision to publish Statutory Notices to Close Ysgol Meidrim and Ysgol y Fro as this will undermine the new government’s commitment to building rural resilience.

The Welsh language society, a direct action pressure group in Wales campaigns for the right of Welsh people to use the Welsh language in every aspect of their lives.

The group said: In Meidrim’s case, an opportunity was missed to collaborate with the school’s governors on an exciting plan to build a community hub alongside a school and start using our schools to revitalise Welsh-speaking rural communities. In the case of Ysgol y Fro Llangyndeyrn, this has again reduced capacity for Welsh language education in the Carmarthen town area, which could mean losing a number of pupils to English education.

Ffred Ffransis said on behalf of the Carmarthen region Cymdeithas yr Iaith said:
“Cymdeithas will work with the governors of both schools to collect objections to the Statutory Notices to Close the schools before the final decisions in the autumn. We also ask the government to intervene so that a commitment to rural resilience is not meaningless in practice.”

Save Ysgol Meidrim – Safiwch Ysgol Meidrim’s posted on Facebook:

We are deeply disappointed to learn that officers are recommending moving forward with Closure Notices for Ysgol Meidrim at the Cabinet meeting on Monday 1 June.
This is particularly difficult to understand given that the Judicial Review hearing was heard in the High Court on 19 May, and the Judge confirmed that a decision is expected within the next 2–3 weeks.

Many within the community feel it would be fairer, more transparent and more democratic for Cabinet to wait for the Court’s decision before moving towards any potentially irreversible step.
However, we remain positive, united and determined.

Over recent months, our community has worked incredibly hard to develop realistic, constructive and forward-looking alternatives for Ysgol Meidrim. We have secured support and engagement from external organisations, community groups, sustainability experts and businesses, and we firmly believe there is still a genuine opportunity for collaboration and a different way forward.
Now more than ever, we need the whole community to rally together!!

Our message remains clear:
We are not simply opposing closure – we are offering solutions.
We believe Ysgol Meidrim can become an example of rural resilience, community partnership and innovative Welsh-medium education for the future.
Please keep all communication respectful, positive and constructive. The strength of this campaign has always been the dignity, unity and determination of the community.
