Snow and Icy Conditions hit Carmarthenshire

Snow showers are continuing to affect parts of Carmarthenshire, including the Carmarthen area, as a spell of cold winter weather holds on across the county. While accumulations are variable, bursts of snow are falling at times, particularly over higher ground, with lower-lying areas seeing a mix of snow, sleet and cold rain.

Further snow showers are expected through today and into tonight, with temperatures remaining close to freezing. Where showers are heavier, snow may settle temporarily, especially on untreated roads, rural routes and higher elevations. Even where snow does not lie for long, melting snow and sleet are likely to refreeze overnight, increasing the risk of icy patches into the early morning.

There has been no official comment from Dyfed-Powys Police in relation to the current snowy conditions. However, standard winter road safety guidance remains in place. Drivers are advised to avoid unnecessary journeys where possible, reduce speed, increase braking distances and allow extra time for travel. Particular care is urged on minor roads, hills and shaded areas where snow and ice are more likely to persist.

Pedestrians are also being warned to take extra care, as pavements and footpaths can quickly become slippery during and after snow showers, especially as temperatures drop overnight.

As the week goes on, snow showers are expected to become more scattered, with some turning to rain as slightly milder air moves in. Despite this, cold conditions will linger, and overnight frost and ice remain a concern across Carmarthenshire.

Local authorities continue to monitor the situation and treat main routes where possible, but residents are encouraged to stay alert to changing conditions and check forecasts before travelling, as further snow showers may develop at short notice across the county and the Carmarthen area.
