County planners have approved the latest application for Cardigan’s new Aldi store.
In an approved application to Ceredigion County Council, Aldi Stores Limited, through agent Avison Young (UK) Limited, sought permission for signage at the new Bath House Road store.
The signs would include bilingual opening-time stickers on the shopfront, two vinyl Aldi logos, an LED wall sign, a promotional graphic and a totem sign bearing the bilingual name Aberteifi/Cardigan, according to an officer’s report recommending approval.
Councillors approved plans in 2025 for a larger Aldi store at Bath House Road to replace the existing one on Aberystwyth Road.
The application followed a consultation held from December, 2024, to January, 2025.
The scheme includes 82 parking spaces and shared access with a previously approved Home Bargains store on the site, a report to councillors said.
It added: “The existing store, consented in 2007, is constrained in size (1,230 sqm gross internal area) and is stated to no longer meet Aldi’s operational requirements.
“The proposed site is stated to offer the only viable opportunity within Cardigan to accommodate a larger, modern store and retain Aldi’s presence in the town.”
The relocation was expected to create 10 jobs, with an alternative use found for the existing store once the new premises opened. The new store would be 53 per cent larger.
It said: “The development is stated to represent an investment of over £6 million into the local economy and strengthens the presence of a major retailer in a more sustainable, accessible location near the town centre, enhancing consumer choice and competition.”
Work has continued at the Bath House Road site this summer, with the store expected to be finished by Christmas.
Aldi’s existing Aberystwyth Road store will remain open until the Bath House Road branch begins trading, with all staff transferring to the new site.
