Lampeter rider Melanie Bradley has secured first place in the challenging Dragon’s Flame endurance ride at the annual Red Dragon Festival of Endurance with her 14-year-old Arab gelding, Supermalc. The win marks a significant achievement for the pair, capping a year of dedicated planning and preparation.

Melanie and Supermalc, known at home as ‘Munchkin’, successfully completed the two-day, 99km competitive endurance ride. Their first-place finish is a testament to the strong partnership between horse and rider, built over Melanie’s 18 years of competing in the sport.

Endurance riding is a growing equestrian discipline in which riders and their horses navigate a marked route through varied terrain. The welfare of the horse is paramount, with compulsory veterinary checks before, during and after the ride to ensure each horse is fit and sound to continue. Success is determined not only by speed, but also by partnership, strategic preparation and careful management of the horse’s stamina and recovery.

Reflecting on her achievement, Melanie shared her experience of the ride and the journey that led to victory.

“The route rode amazingly, with really good going and fantastic views. This result was a year’s worth of planning, being patient when things didn’t quite go to plan, and having an amazing team of professionals behind me,” she said.

“Supermalc, or Munchkin as we call him, is a very quiet, unassuming little pony at home, but he comes alive at rides. He’s a bit of a worrier and takes his confidence from people he knows, so our partnership is key. Coming down the final hill gives me a heart-in-the-mouth moment, enjoying the views for the last time but also knowing you have the final vetting coming up.”

The victory highlights the dedication required to succeed in endurance riding. For Melanie and Munchkin, it was the culmination of a year-long campaign that demanded patience, resilience and the support of a skilled team. After his big win, Munchkin will enjoy a well-deserved three-month break before preparations begin for next season.

The event, held at a venue with excellent facilities, was made possible by the hard work of organisers and volunteers. Melanie extended her thanks to her support crew and the team of professionals who played a key role in her and Munchkin’s success.

Melanie’s story is an inspiring example of the adventure and achievement that can be found in endurance riding. Endurance GB, the sport’s governing body in Great Britain, supports riders at all levels, from local pleasure rides to international championships.

For anyone inspired by her success, Melanie’s advice is simple: “Go for it. Contact your local group for your area; they will be able to help with any questions.”
