Christmas card competition gives Llanelli children chance to show off art skills

Children from schools across Llanelli have been using their artistic talents to enter a competition to create the annual Christmas Card used this year by Dame Nia Griffith MP and Lee Waters MS.

Hundreds of environmentally friendly entries were submitted on this year’s theme, which was “A Green Christmas” and the winners from the Infants and Juniors categories have now been used as the main designs for cards sent out by Llanelli’s representatives in Westminster and Cardiff Bay this Christmas.

The task of judging the entries was a difficult one, carried out by local residents Christine Davies, Senior Occupational Health Advisor at Tata Steel, Juliet Thomas-Davies, Post Mistress at Ann Street Post Office and Gaynor Churchill, a local Craft Group Leader.

Participating schools included Burry Port Community Primary, Cross Hands Primary, Dafen Primary, Old Road School, Pwll County Primary, Swiss Valley Community Primary, Ysgol Gymraeg Brynsierfel, Ysgol Llannon and Ysgol Y Felin.

The Infant Category winner was Magi Eynon of Swiss Valley Community Primary School with the Junior Category first prize going to Maddison Goddard (Ysgol Gymraeg Brynsierfel).

The two winners will have their designs featured on the MP’s and MS’s Christmas cards, along with several runner-up entries, and framed copies given to the winning pupils and their schools.

Llanelli MP, Dame Nia Griffith, said:

“It was a joy to see so many children taking part in this year’s competition and our thanks go to all of the teachers, staff, pupils and judges who took their time to participate and help out.

Congratulations to Magi and Maddison our winners for their stunning entries but also to all those who took part this year. Their work has been such a high standard again and an absolute pleasure to see.”

Lee Waters, MS for Llanelli, added:

“Our Christmas card competition is an annual highlight.  The children’s designs are as bright, joyful and magical as always – just what is needed to put us in the festive mood!”

From now until Christmas, there will be a display of the winning entries in the shop window of 1, The Precinct, Cowell Street, Llanelli SA15 1UU (the empty shop that used to be the Travel House).
