Traffic calming measures and other interventions will be introduced at Station Road and New Dock Road following a series of serious collisions in recent years.
Llanelli Town Council deputy leader Andre McPherson said the decision to move forward with the scheme was “long overdue” but welcome. “Sadly, this action has come too late to prevent past casualties,” he said, “but it is a vital step to save lives in the future.”
Fellow councillors Suzy Curry, John Prosser and Shaun Greaney also backed the plans, noting that both roads pass through densely populated neighbourhoods and are heavily used by pedestrians and schoolchildren.
Carmarthenshire County Council road safety engineer Martin Owen said the proposed improvements aim to reduce vehicle speeds and enhance pedestrian safety.
“The interventions include raised tables at strategic points and side crossing areas,” he explained. “By slowing traffic, these measures will improve driver awareness and create a safer environment for walking and cycling.”
The project forms part of the Welsh Government’s Road Safety Grant Scheme and is due to be implemented during the current financial year.
