First Minister commemorates life of Jim Griffiths at Llanelly House

First Minister, Eluned Morgan and Llanelli’s Member of Parliament, Nia Griffith led a special event at Llanelly House to commemorate the life and legacy of Jim Griffiths – one of Wales’s greatest political figures – on the 50th anniversary of his passing (August 7th.)
The event brought together local Labour members, trade unionists and members of Griffiths’ own family to celebrate a man whose vision transformed Welsh and British politics.
Born in Betws, Amman Valley, Jim Griffiths began his working life at just 13 years old in the coal mines before becoming a leading trade unionist, Labour MP for Llanelli, and ultimately the first Secretary of State for Wales.
As Minister for National Insurance in Clement Attlee’s post-war Labour government, Griffiths laid the foundations of the modern welfare state – creating the National Insurance system that gave working people security in times of sickness, unemployment, and old age.
Speaking at the event, First Minister Eluned Morgan said:
“Jim Griffiths never forgot where he came from. From the coalface in Betws to the cabinet table in Westminster, every decision he made was shaped by his belief that ordinary people deserved dignity and fairness.
“Today, when we talk about ‘The Red Welsh Way’, about putting Wales first, rooted in Labour values of solidarity, equality and community, we are walking in Jim’s footsteps. His fight for a fairer Wales lives on in everything we do.”
Dame Nia Griffith MP
Reflecting on his legacy for Llanelli, Nia Griffith MP added:
“Jim’s work changed millions of lives. From securing pensions and sickness benefits to ensuring Wales had its own voice in government, he was a tireless advocate for working people.
“Fifty years on, his principles still guide us – that no matter your background, you should have the chance to build a better life. That’s what Welsh Labour stands for – then, now and always.”
Griffiths served as MP for Llanelli for over 30 years, earning a reputation as one of Labour’s great reformers. His determination to ensure Wales had a dedicated voice in government paved the way for Welsh devolution and the Senedd we have today.
Today’s event was a chance to remember not just the politician, but the values that drove him: solidarity, equality and hope for a better future. Those values remain at the heart of Welsh Labour’s mission in 2025.
