Former Library Transformed into Vibrant Community Centre in Llwynhendy

Llanelli Rural Council has officially completed renovation works at the former branch library in Llwynhendy, transforming the facility into a vibrant community hub now known as Canolfan Llwynhendy.

The newly redeveloped centre will offer a broad range of services and amenities, including meeting rooms, a café, an automated library service, housing and employment advice, training opportunities, and a variety of community events and initiatives delivered through Pro-Vision Llwynhendy and Our Llwynhendy.

The project has been made possible with support from the Welsh Government, Llanelli Rural Council, Our Llwynhendy, and Carmarthenshire County Council, with the building’s furnishings funded through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund. Ownership of the property has now officially transferred from Carmarthenshire County Council to Llanelli Rural Council. The centre will be open to the public from Monday to Friday, with venue hire available seven days a week.

An official opening ceremony is being planned, pending ministerial availability. Meanwhile, a series of community events will take place to celebrate the launch and showcase the new facilities.

Council Leader and Chairman, Cllr Sue Lewis, said:
“Canolfan Llwynhendy is a fantastic venue for the community. It’s a fresh, light, and welcoming space that has completely transformed the old library building. We’re proud to offer a place where people can access vital services locally and enjoy a wide range of activities. The integration with the outdoor improvements at Parc Y Gwili, including the play areas and landscaping, creates a seamless and welcoming environment that encourages community use and wellbeing.”

Cllr Deryk Cundy, Chairman of the Recreation and Welfare Committee, added:
“This is a real asset for Llwynhendy. The automated library service means longer opening hours and greater accessibility, no more part-time library services. But it’s not just about books; Canolfan Llwynhendy brings together a range of vital services under one roof. From housing and employment advice to training and community initiatives, it’s a place where people can get support, learn, and connect. The addition of a café creates a welcoming social space for residents to meet, relax, and engage with others, helping to build a stronger sense of community. Combined with the new play provisions and landscaping at Parc Y Gwili, the centre offers a seamless indoor-outdoor experience that encourages wellbeing and makes the area a true destination for all ages.”
