Ysgol Gymraeg Ffwrnes is celebrating after winning two awards in Keep Wales Tidy’s innovation challenge, inspired by The Earthshot Prize.
Ysgol Gymraeg Ffwrnes were recently awarded their first Eco-Schools Platinum Award, the highest honour in the internationally recognised Eco-Schools programme.
Ysgol Gymraeg Ffwrnes is celebrating after winning two awards in Keep Wales Tidy’s innovation challenge, inspired by The Earthshot Prize.
As part of Climate Challenge Cymru, primary and secondary schools across Wales were invited to submit short videos capturing creative ideas to tackle one of five global challenges, or ‘Earthshots’: Build a Waste-Free World, Clean Our Air, Fix Our Climate, Protect and Restore Nature and Revive Our Oceans.
Ysgol Gymraeg Ffwrnes in Llanelli won an incredible two awards, taking top honours in both the Revive Our Oceans and Fix Our Climate categories. Judges praised their work on seagrass habitats and eco-moorings, as well as their exploration of local food to reduce carbon emissions. They were presented with their awards at a special ceremony in Cardiff last month.
The success comes just months after the school achieved its first Eco-Schools Platinum Award – the highest accolade in the internationally recognised Eco-Schools programme. The award recognises schools that have demonstrated a long-term commitment to pupil-led environmental action and sustainability. Ysgol Gymraeg Ffwrnes is one of more than three-quarters of schools across Wales taking part in Eco-Schools or other Keep Wales Tidy education programmes.
Climate Challenge Cymru is managed by Keep Wales Tidy’s Eco-Schools team, in partnership with Welsh Government.
Speaking after the ceremony, Brodi Jenkins, Blwyddyn 4 said:
“This was such a wonderful and exciting experience, and we can’t believe we had two awards. It’s been really interesting learning about climate change and how we can come together to help tackle it. My friends in school really enjoyed the projects and are already thinking of other projects ready for the new school year. We can’t wait to see what next year will bring.”

The projects on display were a testament not only to their creativity but to their resolve to make a real difference in Wales and beyond.
