White Knights Chess Club 50th Anniversary Tournament

White Knights Chess Club were formed in 1973 so have been celebrating their 50th Anniversary this summer. To commemorate the occasion a 50th Anniversary quickplay tournament was held on Saturday 17th June 2023. Both current and ex members were invited and it was great to see 20 members attend this special occasion. The event was held in the Conservative Club, Cowell Street, Llanelli.

The tournament took the format of each player playing 5 games where they had 25 minutes on the clock to complete the match. After 2 rounds a buffet lunch was enjoyed by all and it was a great opportunity for current members to catch up with old friends. The event was hard fought and the winners are shown below

Joint first place – Alan Young, Allan Pleasants and Jason Garcia – 4 points
Grading prize winners – Vismith Prabhu, Chris Daniel and Malcolm Probert – 3 points.

Ex member and ex Llanelli Town Mayor, Mr Mike Cranham was kind enough to attend and to present the awards.

There were also awards given to players for their performances during the recent league season and these are shown below:

2022-23 – Player of the season – Alan Young
2022-23 – New Player of the season – Vismith Prabhu
2022-23 – Clubman of the year – Jason Garcia

A special long service award was given to Alan Young who joined the club as a 13 year old in 1978, so had given 45 years continuous service.

White Knights chess club have 4 teams that play in the West Wales Chess League and also now have a junior team which will be playing in the West Wales minor league from September 2023.

We currently have about 30 members whose ages range from 6 to 70.

Over the last few years, we have been consistently one of the most successful clubs in Wales and in 2023 we won for the first time the Welsh Club Championship which is a great way to celebrate our 50th anniversary. This means we are now eligible to represent Wales at the European Club Championships in Albania in October 2023. This will be a great opportunity for us as an amateur side to compete with professional teams from all over Europe.

We hold club nights every Wednesday at 7:15pm in the Conservative Club and are a very welcoming and friendly club. Anyone interested in attending can contact club secretary Jason Garcia on 07543545734.
