350 pupils discover the sport of bowls through schools competition

More than 350 primary school pupils from across Caerphilly County Borough discovered the sport of bowls through this year’s annual schools competition, with 76 finalists progressing to Finals Day at Islwyn Park and Oakdale Bowls Club.

After qualifying through cluster rounds held in April at Ystrad Mynach Bowls Club, Blackwood Bowls Club, Morgan Jones Park Bowls Club and Ynysddu Bowls Club, the top two teams from each competition battled it out for the county titles.

This year’s winners were:

Year 3/4 Girls: Glyngaer Primary School
Year 3/4 Boys: Bryn Primary School
Year 5/6 Girls: Blackwood Primary School
Year 5/6 Boys: Tyn–Y–Wern Primary School
The annual competition supports the Sport and Active Recreation Strategy 2019-2029 by introducing children to new sports, helping them build confidence and encouraging lifelong participation in physical activity.

Cllr Chris Morgan, Cabinet Member for Sport and Leisure Leisure, said:

“Providing opportunities for children to experience a wide range of sports is a key part of helping them lead active, healthy lives. It’s fantastic to see so many pupils taking part in this year’s competition, and I hope many will continue enjoying bowls and other sports for years to come.”
