Fire crews tackle huge blaze on Fairwood Common

MOST of Swansea’s fire crews have been tackling a huge grass fire on Fairwood Common today, Saturday (Apr 13).

The incident is believed to have started at around 3.30pm. Fires could be seen to the west and the east of the airport stretching across the common.

Speaking to fire officers at the scene they said that they could not rule out the possibility that the fire had been started deliberately.

The airport and road along the common remained open despite the thick smoke rising from the fire.

The impact on the local environment’s flora and fauna will be devastating. At this time of year birds will have been nesting. The area is also home to wild ponies and local farmers use the area to graze cattle and sheep.
