Local officer awarded Points of Light Award for heroic defibrillator fundraising

After using a defibrillator to save a person’s life in Maerdy in 2016, Detective Constable Steven Davies has dedicated his spare time in setting up a network of defibrillators in his local communities of Tonyrefail and Gilfach Goch.

He has since been recognised by a panel at Downing Street and was announced last Friday as being the Points of Light award winner.

DC Davies, has since raised £50,000 towards the vital life-saving equipment, and has overseen the installation of nearly 40 defibrillators in the community.

Not content with that figure, DC Davies continues to raise funds, while also developing back-end support and promotion of these defibrillators, educating local residents and children on their locations and on how to use the defibrillators wit free training sessions.

In September 2022 came DC Davies’s most noble examples of heroism.

He received a call requesting the code for the defibrillator in the village, as a 49-year-old male had collapsed at home in front of his teenage son and had stopped breathing. DC Davies headed to the location of the casualty where he performed CPR for over an hour before medical professionals arrived and the man was sadly declared dead.

“This latest incident highlights how unassuming yet remarkable an individual Steve Davies is,” Detective Chief Inspector Russell Jenkins said.

“He is a true community hero and a role model within South Wales Police.”

Steve, alongside his Points of Light Award recently received a Diolch from Chief Constable Jeremy Vaughan.
