Oldham Brass Band warm the cockles at Tenby

Tenby came alive to the sound of a big brass band today, Sunday (Jul 23).

Despite the intermittent chilly wind almost blowing away the sheet music the Oldham Music Centre Youth Brass Band played on and warmed the cockles of many a people’s hearts. There was some sunshine not least in the smiles on the faces of the people sitting on the grass bank in front of the bandstand.

It was quite surreal listening to the band belting out The Magnificent Seven with the zoo featured in Dr Who and Caldey Island as the backdrop.

People gathered to watch and listen with many either clapping, singing or dancing along to the tunes. The repertoire was quite mixed. From Star Wars and Teenage Dirt Bag to Sweet Gingerbread Man, Sir Duke by Stevie Wonder, I want You Back by Michael Jackson complete with the conductor disco dancing and The Four Seasons, December 1963.

The band had arrived in Tenby following a stint at Llandrindod Wells where they played on through the rain to entertain the audience. The Mayor, Cllr Marcia Morgan was joined by other members of the Town Council and local residents to welcome the the Band to Llandrindod Wells.

It is easy to see why this band have won so many awards and how they manage to travel the world to play for appreciative audiences. The talent was not lost on the Tenby audience who bayed for more when the band finished their set.

Band Leader Jonathan Leedale said that it was lovely to be in Tenby and that the band had had a very warm welcome.
