Rapid Response by Rescue Teams
Emergency responders were notified by a member of the public about children struggling in the water near the slipway at Aberavon Beach around 8:33 PM. In response, Port Talbot Coastguard Rescue deployed a throw line, successfully bringing three children ashore, while rescue officers entered the sea to reach the remaining three.
Adding to the coordinated efforts, Porthcawl Coastguard and the Port Talbot RNLI lifeboat also attended the scene.
Medical Assessment and Transport
All six children were assessed on-site at the nearby Coastguard station, where they received initial emergency care. The Welsh Ambulance Service had dispatched three emergency ambulances and an operations manager in response to the incident.
Two of the children were transported to hospital by ambulance, while the remaining four made their own way to the hospital for further medical evaluation.
Official Remarks and Context
Port Talbot Coastguard characterised the event as a “major incident,” describing it as a “‘mass casualty water rescue.’” The team highlighted that this was their third water rescue of the year, bringing the total number of lives saved by their efforts so far to nine. Their statement praised the courage, professionalism, and unwavering commitment of Coastguard Rescue Officers in protecting their coastal community.
Safety Reminder
Aberavon Beach, typically patrolled by both RNLI lifeguards and the Coastguard, serves as a reminder of the ever-present risks of marine environments, even along monitored beaches. This incident underscores the importance of vigilant supervision, keen local awareness of changing sea conditions, and swift emergency response systems.
