Disabled people from the UK travelling to Italy will now be able to use their Blue Badge overseas, making it easier to access reserved parking spaces and travel with greater confidence.

The new arrangement is designed to remove uncertainty for disabled travellers, whether they are visiting Italy for a holiday, to see family and friends, or for work. By allowing Blue Badge holders to access designated parking provisions, the change will help many people park closer to their destination and avoid unnecessary stress while travelling abroad.

The agreement builds on a similar scheme introduced with France, where UK Blue Badge holders have been able to use their permits since August last year. The Government is also continuing discussions with Spain in the hope of securing similar arrangements for Blue Badge users travelling there.

The move forms part of the Government’s wider commitment to improving accessibility and supporting disabled people to travel independently, both at home and overseas.

The agreement will also benefit Italian visitors travelling to the UK, as Italian disabled parking permits will now be recognised here.

Roads Minister Justin Madders said:

“Disabled people shouldn’t have to worry about whether their parking permit will be recognised when travelling abroad.

“These new arrangements with Italy mean Blue Badge holders can relax and enjoy their trip, with easier access to reserved parking and exemptions from charges, whether they’re travelling for a holiday, visiting family or for work.”

The Government hopes the reciprocal arrangement will make international travel simpler and more accessible for disabled people while strengthening cooperation between the UK and Italy on inclusive mobility.
