“UK Conservative government not serious on fighting climate change” says Welsh Lib Dem leader

The Welsh Liberal Democrat leader Jane Dodds MS has criticised the UK Tory government of not taking the fight against climate change seriously.

The criticism comes following the revelation that the UK climate change minister Graham Stuart will be flying back to the COP28 talks in Dubai, after originally leaving the conference to vote on the government’s Rwanda bill.

The back-and-forth journey means that Mr Stuart will be clocking up more than 6,800 air miles to discuss the best course of action to combat carbon emissions.

Commenting, Jane Dodds MS said:

“At a time when the fight against climate change is reaching a critical stage, the Conservative government are choosing to distract themselves with internal quarrelling and pointless popularity scoring.

I was shocked to hear that the UK’s climate change minister Graham Stewart left the COP28 summit in Dubai during its most critical stage, just so that he could attend the government’s Rwanda vote.

How can we take the Tories seriously when they talk about fighting climate change, when they are flying back Minster’s from crucial climate talks prematurely to help prop up an already failing government?

We need a government in Westminster that is willing to get serious on combating climate change, something which the Tories are quite clearly not interested in doing themselves.

The Conservatives have already cast a dark shadow over the future of our country, let’s not allow them to do the same for the future of our planet.”
