Politicians Praise Stradey School Investment

Local politicians Lee Waters MS and Nia Griffith MP have voiced their praise for a £4.4 million investment to create a dedicated Welsh language immersion centre to provide support for pupils to develop their Welsh language fluency, as well as for 228 additional pupil places at Ysgol Y Strade.

This funding was announced by the Minister for Education and Welsh Language, Jeremy Miles, in the Senedd last week.

Speaking after the announcement Lee Waters MS said:

“This investment has opened up further opportunities for students and parents. The immersion centre gives parents an additional option for their child’s education. Even if a person’s child did not attend a Welsh-medium Nursery/Primary School at the start of their education it will not be too late for people to consider a Welsh-medium Education.”

“A bilingual education has many advantages, for instance, broadening further education and career choices, as well as opening up cultural opportunities. The Welsh Government has set a target of reaching 1 million Welsh speakers by 2050 to secure the vitality of the language for future generations. I am pleased to see this investment in Llanelli.”

Llanelli’s Member of Parliament Nia Griffith added:

“ This is another very welcome investment by Welsh Labour Government in state-of-the-art facilities for pupils in our area, and I am very glad that they are prioritising investing in our children’s future, in spite of the significant cut over the last decade to the real-terms value of the budget Wales receives from the UK Government.”

The funding for Ysgol Y Strade from the Welsh Government, is one of several projects which will receive a share of the £30 million of capital funding to expand Welsh-medium education.
