Labour Welcomes Improved Workplace Bereavement Rights

Women and their partners will soon be entitled to take up to two weeks off work after pregnancy loss, following action from the UK Labour Government.

The strengthened rights will come into force in Wales from April 2027. Although an estimated one in five women in the UK will experience a miscarriage in their lifetime, there is currently no automatic statutory leave in Wales for pregnancy loss before 24 weeks. The new rights will be available to women and their partners who experience pregnancy loss at any stage, including miscarriage, terminations, and unsuccessful IVF embryo transfers.

Welsh Labour Spokesperson for Employment, Shav Taj MS said:

“Losing a pregnancy can be devastating.

“In these circumstances, no worker should have to choose between taking the time and space they need to grieve and worrying about their job.

“I am proud that the UK Labour Government is strengthening rights at work and helping to make an incredibly difficult time that little bit easier.

“This pregnancy loss awareness month, my thoughts are with all those who have suffered or are currently suffering such a loss.”
