Residents, businesses and motorists in Killay will benefit from a major storm drain upgrade to reduce flooding during heavy rainfall.
Swansea Council is installing an ‘overflow’ drainage system at Killay Square to manage excess water and protect homes, businesses and key infrastructure from severe weather.
Work along sections of Goetre Fawr Road and Gower Road will commence on November 16 and is expected to take approximately 26 weeks. A temporary one-way traffic plan will help keep motorists moving during installation.
Flooding at Killay Square has repeatedly forced the junction to close, disrupting journeys through the community. The existing drainage system cannot cope with the volume of water during heavy rainfall.
Extensive consultation with residents, businesses, stakeholders, elected members and community groups has helped shape the scheme, funded through the Welsh Government Regional Transport Fund.
The investment aims to reduce future flood risk and make this important junction more resilient to severe weather, benefiting people living, working and travelling through the area.
Cabinet Member for Environment and Infrastructure, Cllr Andrew Stevens, said: “The main cause of the flooding issues at the location is that the existing drainage system simply cannot cope with the volume of water that passes through the area during heavy rainfall.
“We have previously secured funding through the Welsh Government Regional Transport Fund so we can tackle this issue head on and make sure the roads are not impacted by severe weather in the future.
“This is a major drainage infrastructure installation and unfortunately cannot be completed without some disruption for motorists and residents living the area. We are doing all we can to complete this important scheme with as little disruption as possible.”
Killay is one of two flood alleviation projects planned in Swansea. The second will tackle similar problems at Scurlage/Llandewi Corner in Gower, where heavy rainfall can flood the road and make it impassable to motorists.
